Cliff Richard

Cliff Richard was born Harry Rodger Webb and his group’s name was initially Harry Webb and the Drifters. This was changed when Harry Greatorex, a promoter for the Regal Ballroom venue in Ripley (Derbyshire, UK) suggested to the group that they change the singer’s name. The first suggestion was Cliff Richards, made by early Drifters band member Johnny Foster, after which fellow member Ian Samwell suggested leaving off the last “s” to make it more memorable. The Drifters later became The Shadows.
