Chumbawumba

Early in the band’s career it was rumored that the name had been seen in a public toilet during a dream by Danbert Nobacon (b. Nigel Hunter)–“Chumba” was the sign on the gents, and “Wumba” on the ladies. The group denies this however, saying the name means nothing, although Nobacon is normally given credit for coming up with the name. Nobacon did not take his name because he is vegan, as is commonly thought–rather he took his name from the old knock-knock joke (“Knock-knock” “Who’s there?” “Egbert” “Egbert who?” “Egbert no bacon!”), using Danbert instead of Egbert because he was called “Dan” by his friends. Alice Nutter (vocals, keyboards) was christened Anne, but changed her name because she didn’t like being named after Princess Anne–she was known as Mad Anne when the band first started out; Alice Nutter was the name of a woman falsely accused as a witch in Pendle, Lancashire in 1612 and subsequently executed.
